Madonna's version for me is the best. Obviously her's is a CD performance and can't be reproduced live; but, as a pop song — Madonna's hands down. I never liked Patti's, or Julie's, or Elaine's or even Sarah Brightman. They were all either too soft, or to angry or too — much! I like ONJ's as well and rank it second to Madge's .x

Verges on being a candied yam, but i think she yanks it back enough emotionally to leave the performance lightly sweet instead of caramelly.

Hey, this was never anything but a tour de force for a very rich, very beautiful, very successful woman who had nothing to prove except maybe to herself. Nothing against Sara Brightman or Patti Lupone but the unadorned dignity Ms. Johns brings to this song is breathtaking. And I'm an unsentimental old Stoner!
