Here is a longplay of the awesome game Space Quest IV - however, the Amiga port of this game is *horrible*!!!
This is one of the worst ports I have ever seen in my life - they put absolutely no effort at all into it.

This is played on a (emulated) very fast Amiga as on a normal Amiga 500 this game is so slow that it's unplayable.

This is the intro - the game starts in the next part.

  • What version of Amiga (example: Amga 500) should I buy if I want to play space quest games like this one? Please reply!!!

  • @Taking1n1

You shouldn't play these games on an Amiga, they're really bad ports.

But if you really want to, you should get a fast Amiga with a harddrive.

An accelerated Amiga 1200 or something like that.

  • Wow, this is horrible, traditionally I always envied the Amiga, but the PC VGA version was so superior graphics and sounds. The fact the music runs at almost 1/2 speed is horrible, the game totally loses the feel which was truly a landmark of computer gaming. SQ4 is one of my top 5 computer games of all time.

So congrats Sierra, you actually made me think my PC gaming was pretty darn good.

  • That's only because Sierra made the worst Amiga ports I've ever seen.

Have a look at Monkey Island for Amiga.. it only uses 32 colors but it still looks great.. unlike these absolutely horrible Sierra ports.

  • Okay, why did they slow down the music so much? The title theme sounds like a dirge!

  • It's a crap port.

  • Well. I bought an Amiga 500 that's in storage, along with some Sierra games, and it's been very impractical for the time being to hook it up at my desk where I spend too much of my day.

So I spent $10 on Amiga Forever (it's a prepackaged UAE made easy with legal Kickstart and Workbench) and figured I'd download the games.

Seeing the portwork here.. the sense of urgency to get the games on this laptop isn't quite there. :-|

  • @travisowens The slower music is because this port is made on amiga NTSC amiga (60 hz) but the Amiga is only a popular gaming system in europe where PAL video is used (50 hz) thus slowing the game down like 5-12 %

So if played on a NTSC machine or edit it for PAL machines the music should play at full speed.

  • @janmansde3dede - I always wondered why nobody used EHB mode too. It would have worked great for Sierra games.

  • Looks like they are using only 16 colors... (Monkey island looks fantastic in 32 )

also why din't most software studio's used the EHB mode ? (64 colors)

would worked so much better !

  • The slow music is probably a timing issue because this is the NTSC version of SQ4 being played on a PAL machine.

I never understood though why Amiga always got the shaft with Sierra's games though. They could have had 32 colors all along but they didn't jump on that until KQ5/SQ4.

  • dear sierra:

    VGA =/= amiga 32color.

oh well, at least the SQIII port wasn't this bad...sure the graphics weren't any better, but at least they aren't washed out like SQIV.

also, they didn't screw up the music :)
