I was never scared of them; I've just always hated their so obviously-chosen-to-be-funny clothes & make-up and their chaotic gags done for no reason other than that clowns are expected to do them. On the other hand, I LOVE Laurel & Hardy, because even their most outrageously ludicrous gags (including the "Battle of the Century" pie fight which involves an entire city block of people) are all driven by the strongly defined situation and/or characters.
I wasn't one of those kids who were scared of clowns, but looking at them, it's easy to understand why they give some of our youngest citizens nightmares.
