This is the dance lesson from 'Whitby Weekender', a video I made with Ellen Cantor in 2006. This sequence was shot long before we realized we would actually make a full-length film. It was intended to be a very basic introduction to Northern soul dance steps for Ellen before we went off the Togetherness Weekender in Whitby. Hence the ill-considered choice of carpet area to film.
Oh well. It adds authenticity I suppose.

  • VERY NICE film guys! Gave me loads of ideas for little variations. I'm a beginner here in the states where there are no classes, or teachers, but luckily a growing number of soul nights with young people dancing. I've just had to figure things out on my own until now, and this helps me out TREMENDOUSLY! I feel like I was born to dance this way and to this music. Keep it up and keep the faith. CHEERS!

  • Thanks for the comments. The original idea was to make a film for friends in Montreal so they could practice over there. Great to know it works for you. Keep it going and keep the the faith!

  • @BarrioPatrol nice 1 buddy, here in the uk many of us old soul music fans have thought you guys in the usa had forgotten the old grooves,i bet theres still a few old folks in detroit that have vinyl ,best way to look at learning is practising at home with tunes on + dont worry about messing up.we've all fallen over etc, just get into it + have fun.maybe i'll put a vid up,the acrobatics do take time + martial art experience helps no matter how little,b good p
