@PooPooOnMyNewShoe Sorry PooPoo! Don and Mel without Mark IS NOT GRAND FUNK RAILROAD! End of discussion, close the page! This Max Carl or whoever is filling in for Mark is pathetic and did a disservice to this great song! I saw GFR on tour in 1975 and again in their Reunion tour in 98! That band is GFR not this one! Just my 2 cents worth! KEEP ON ROCK'IN AND ROLLING! Hoo Ah!
ok, so I listened to this version ... sorry - but I cannot take it. I guess I am just old school. imho, the best version is the one from the TV show in '69. This one sounds to me like a bar band trying really hard, no dynamics. If Don and Mel approve of this sound - then Mark really was the heart and soul of the band.
@xenavor Better check your facts. Don Brewer and Mel Schacher are STILL in this band and tour as GFR minus Mark Farner. They have a new line up as you can see but are NOT a tribute band. I followed GFR since the 70s, opened for them twice with my own band in the 80s and met Mel and Don again back stage this past summer when they came to my home town. This is still GFR albeit without Farner and yes Mark was the driving force but they were still GREAT with Max Carl, Tim Cashion, and Bruce Kulick.
They are Grand Funk RailRoad, a tribute band, as opposed to Grand Funk Railroad, the original Group that did not capitalize the second "R" in Railroad.
And as far as their performance goes, anyone who endeavors to play GFR is good in my book ... I like to see how people interpret and perform this song, the song itself is great, so any version carries some of that magic. Yeah I like this performance, it is all a tribute to what Mark Farner made it.
You'd think the singer would take the time to learn the words, or at least make a better attempt to sing them. Sounds like he's got a mouth full of mush.
Kulick pays tribute to Farner's licks in this song.....but he's a much better overall player. Farner's guitar work didn't equal that of the greats of his day....but he had a raw style and sound that were very appealing. I'd say Farner's biggest assets were his vocals and stage presence. One of the best rock vocalists and front-men ever. He still has the pipes and presence.
Have admired Schacher's bass work since the "On Time" album.
