Susanna's recitative and aria in the fourth act with Dawn Upshaw.
Salzburg 1991

Giunse alfin il momento
che godrò senz'affanno
in braccio all'idol mio. Timide cure,
uscite dal mio petto,
a turbar non venite il mio diletto!
Oh, come par che all'amoroso foco
l'amenità del loco,
la terra e il ciel risponda,
come la notte i furti miei seconda!

qui ridono i fioretti e l'erba è fresca,
ai piaceri d'amor qui tutto adesca.
Vieni, ben mio, tra queste piante ascose,
ti vo' la fronte incoronar di rose.

Finally there is the moment
I can enjoy without regret
in the arms of my beloved.
Timid worries
leave my bosom
and don't return to disturb my pleasure!
Oh, how it seems, as if love's fire
in the beauty of this place,
in earth and sky is reflected.
How the night helps in my stealth.

Oh, come, don't hesitate, oh beautiful joy,
come where love calls you to pleasure,
as long as the nightly torch does not shine at the sky,
as long as the air is dark and the world is quiet.
Here murmurs the stream, the wisp is teasing,
which with sweet whispering revives the heart,
here laugh the flowers and the grass is fresh
to invite everyone to the joys of love.
Come, my love, hidden between those plants
I will crown your brow with roses.

  • What are the words to this beautiful aria? Please let me know.

  • you can check the description for the italian words as well now, if you like...

  • i don't know about the pronunciation; but the singing is far better than ok... her voice is heavenly; she still remains my favourite Susanna!

  • Her singing is miraculous. As deceptively simple as this aria is, to sing it THAT well is no small feat, especially since the temptation is to slack off because it IS a relatively simple aria. What a marvelous performance.

I also gotta talk about his reactions, too, which were amazing. Figaro, previously angry, is now absolutely crushed. I kept thinking, "How can she keep going while he's making THAT face?"

  • Yeah soubrette pieces are totally safe for the trained teen voice. :)

  • One of the best Susannas ever! She sings so tenderly...)

  • Magic!!!

  • Whoa! I don't think i could sing this THAT well. It'd be interesting to see if anyone could top it! Beautiful song though! =)

  • I Was Redirected by Wikipedie :)

  • @pinelopit That's exactly the word. :)

I guess it's not just the aspiration of voiceless stops (if they are stressed and are not proceeded by an S sound bla bla). The T sound in English is not produced in the exact same place in the mouth as in Italian, for instance. It may be a bit closer to the Italian Z in 'lezione'.

Italian is a beautiful, beautiful language. :)))

  • @Edelien she's a soubrette actually. like me :) i think she's got an amazing voice.

  • I've performed this piece before. So much fun and emotion. Absolutely a wonderful rendition. Love it!

  • Compare to another similar aria writen by JOSEPH MARTIN KRAUS (1756-1792):

    Concert aria - " Innocente donzelletta "

  • Light lyric sopranos always sound so young...That to me is fantastic.

  • I know precisely what you're talking about, and it is annoying. However, as easy as Italian is to sing in, very few non-Italians ever completely master it. Ferruccio Furlanetto said in an interview that the only non-Italian he's known to completely nail the language is Kathleen Battle, and I've heard her make that same mistake before as well. It's worth the effort to bear it when you hear it, I think.
