This must have been the last episode...Kevin Allman's book "TV Turkeys" mentions that the finale aired the first week of Jan. 86, and that Purcell was running the show solo for its last 2 wks...former co-host McLean Stevenson was booted after the show's cancellation was announced in Dec, and their original co-host Stuart Damon left after only a few weeks!

It IS Charlie O'Donnell.
And "America" was a ripoff of "Hour Magazine"; ironically, both shows are now owned by CBS.

In the world of talk-show satire saturation,
