Oh hey, Sage Wright here. This is the Japanese speech I gave at Meguro Gakuin when my family and I visited Tokyo.

  • i think the first time they laughed was when he said 「父は60歳ですが、もう退職しています (it means "my father is 60 years old, but he's already retired", literally)」, and I guess this might be considered as a humor that he implied, because it could be interpreted as he mentioned "he's ONLY 60 years old, but ANYHOW, he's retired already", and that is clear by the fact that right after he said that, one of those students said "(that's) Too early!". This, in Japan, is what to be called as"

    ツッコミ(tsukkomi)”.

  • Thank you for your helpful explanation!

  • Nah, it was in a formal setting and I was speaking in front of teachers as well as students. "Watashi" is not for females only. I used it correctly.

I said boku after the speech when I talked to the students individually or in small groups.

  • awesome, I understood most of it :D couldn't make out some things, but still ^^

I wonder why they were laughing...
