SGA from POETRY: a hip hop album by Christopher K.P. Brown

Lyrics:

Under appreciated
Id never heard her work out loud
until def poetry jam
when she did this poem
about the mother who sold her daughter for drugs
I understood it like it was a poem I shouldve written
like it was a poem I couldnt write right now
like she could only deliver it like she did
like I used to think she wasnt Black because her last name was Sanchez
when really she was brown just like me
started studying her literature
five seven five haikus
homegirls and hand grenades
elegy for move in Philadelphia
making struggles do down in history
and though shes still alive
I hope she goes down in history
as one of the great poets of our time
thats why I wrote this rhyme
on a sister some never knew
Sonia Sanchez

at an open mic one night
and a friend did this poem one night called Ego-Trippin
helping me to see how far poetry could travel
shed never met the author
but rather the poem as her own
feeling blue about my own poetry
hearing hers was like cotton candy on a rainy day
then one day, I think it was may of 06
when I shook the hand of Nikki-Rosa for myself
told her that Id taken Racism 101 from the shelf
and read it like it was scripture
and she probably dont remember me
but I remember her
and I remember when
another friend who attended Fisk
who didnt know who she was
that offended Chris
forcing me to write words like this
that focus on the one and only
Nikki Giovanni

I was just eight years old
but still remember when I saw her on tv
doing a poem
the inauguration of president Clinton
she was Arkansas raised
he was Arkansas raised
I was Arkansas raised
was in my Arkansas days
when I studied her work
noticing this black womans work
reading phenomenal woman
seeing this black womans worth
her most noted verse says Still I Rise
so important to me so still here I try
to write her down in history
for being a queen of what Im trying to do
words written about Maya Angelou.

The CD has sold over 300 copies so far and is currently available for only $9.95. Click here to purchase or find out more info about the album/artist:
