I'd have to agree with you. Bill's departure changed them an awful lot, both musically and psycholgically, I think, because it made all of them, as middle aged guys, to re-assess their career. They slowed down. More studio, less touring. Better technically, but less urgent and pure. The Reckoning", "Fables", "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Work" tours was never equalled.
