The father of British Traditional Jazz in the UK, George Webb, passed away, aged 92 on 10th March 2010.
He formed the first Traditional Jazz Revival band in the UK in 1943.

George Webb's Dixielanders led the trail we have all followed.

George was playing piano until a few months before his passing.

Gathered to honour this great man of jazz were virtually all the important names in the music.

It was especially delightful to see three original members of the Dixiielanders, Wally Fawkes, Owen Bryce and Eddie Harvey.

Both Wally and Owen can be seen in the parade in this video - and Owen with the band which played at George's wake, following the ceremony.

Also present, and looking in great shape was veteran clarinet star, Monty Sunshine.

There are too many names to list - but suffice to say that for a short time the traffic stopped and the town of Sidcup, Kent, paid its respects to a remarkable man, as his funeral procession marched in true New Orleans style.

Thank you for the music, George.

  • So sad to hear of Georges passing. But it is nice to see that they gave him a traditional New Orleans send off.. I got to know George from when I was a member of the jazz club he ran in the late fifties and sixties from the Shakespeare Hotel in Woolwich, South-east London. I think it was called "The Hot Club of London". George was always there to greet you upon entry. He was a purist and always had top class true New Orleans style bands,. May you rest in peace.

  • What a great tribute to a great man

  • So sad to have heard of George's passing. Unfortunately a lot of us were unaware of it until the Just Jazz magazine was circulated at the end of March. We, The Brothers, or some of us, declared our email addresses specifically to keep members informed of all manner of events but heard nothing. It would have been a privilege to have been there to pass on my last respects to our dear brother but .................................... Thanks for posting the Video John ..... Syd
