As an African American with Caribbean ancestry but as an outsider of both traditions, it occurs to me that the Gombeys traditions are very similar to those of the Mardi Gras Indians. Both of those traditions seem to be honoring/imitating African and Native American cultures. I'm interested in learning more about the history of Gombeys.
