It's not so much that schools don't try to teach evolution, but that there are so many quasi-religious organizations, like the Discovery Institute, that do so much to pollute the literature, bribe scientists, and anything else they can think of, immoral or not, to thwart the teaching of evolution.
Given that atheists are unwilling to stoop to dishonesty and fraud we're fighting an uphill battle against an enemy willing to deploy vastly more powerful weapons.
The visible marks of extraordinary wisdom and power appear so plainly in all the works of the creation that a rational creature, who will but seriously reflect on them, cannot miss the discovery of a Deity. --- John Locke
Intermender, My (comic) example below also commits fallacy of virtue; despite Tipler having status and reputation he's not necessarily correct- I merely imply that he IS because of his credentials.
This faulty logic is rife throughout the God Delusion. My point is that if Rich wants to argue Judaism, do it in Aramaic Hebrew; Koine Greek for Xianity,; and Arabic for Islam (ie. do Theology). Find inconsistencies within religions themselves; don't just call them "delusional" and expect a clap
Hi, thanks for the comprehensive reply. I think we should limit my earlier request and just discuss one example to avoid being blocked. So i will reply about the straw man example when i have thought about it, but i'll also look at the other stuff you've given me.
Thanks again for your help, i really enjoyed the book and its useful to get another take on it because i really want to understand it properly. Talk to you soon.
Here is a similar argument/example; the Judeo-Christian resurrection of the dead is a (proven) scientific certainty- since
1. Scientists use logic and observable phenomena to construct theoretical explanations of the world. 2. I recently talked to Frank Tipler (head of Maths AND Physics at Tulane University) who formulated the scientific formula for the physical resurrection of the dead at the end of time. 3. conclusion= Tipler is a 'smashing' scientist, and resurrection is a fact= EPIC FAIL.
I think this theory is completely ludicrous there is absolutely no evidence to support your comment. Education is what is lacking in your comment. Science and religion cannot be written in the same sentence because one contridicts the other.
boyfletch71, please read my comments again. FOLLOW THE LOGIC. Are you denying that Frank Tipler (actually, physically) wrote such an equation?
Of course the above statement was ludicrous, IT DEMONSTRATES AN EXAMPLE OF FALSE LOGIC; whether the statement is true or not is entirely another matter.
Why do people have such problems understanding logic?!?! :'(
And no science and religion do not always contradict, particularly forms of Buddhism (atheistic, denies the supernatural).
Sure. Dawkins claims observant Jews are discouraged from marrying people from other religions. I agree with this statement (from a theological P.O.V.), HIS logic is
1. Jewish marriage procedures are outlined in Torah, Talmud, and especially in Mishnah Kiddushin ; e.g. Deuteronomy 22:28 2. Here are three observant Jews. 3. Conclusion= Since they are 'observant' Jews, the words of just 3 individuals give weight (proof) to his argument.
-I agree with Dawkins statement, but this logic is faulty
