Will Muslims go the whole hog and destroy this painting?
THE Religion of Perpetual Outrage has found something new to offend it: a picture of a Muslim woman cradling a pig.
Mokhtar Badri, the vice-president of the Muslim Association of Britain, tells the Telegraphs Mandrake that his organisation plans to visit the SaLon Gallery, in Notting Hill, west London, to demand that it remove Sarah Maples painting when it exhibits it next week.
Said Badri:
Although we condemn violence Muslims have a right to express their disgust at this work. An artist has the right to free speech and to express him or herself, but people also have the right to protest. She clearly wants to provoke a strong reaction from Muslims and that is what she will get.
Maple, 23, who was brought up as a Muslim, has already evoked Islamic wrath. Her exhibition at Rolling Stone Woods gallery earlier this year depicted Muslim women in provocative poses, including one suggestively sucking on a banana.
Badri explained the upset that would be caused by the image.

Muslims believe that all of Gods creatures should be treated with respect, but we are taught to keep our distance from pigs because they are unclean. That is why this picture is so offensive to us.
A spokesman for the gallery explained:

She doesnt intend to offend anyone but simply wants to pose questions about Muslim culture and identity.

@naheda101 many people can get offended by the bigist and smallist of things. Now wheather that calls for an overly offensive/agressive responce or a sutle expansive rational response, or just a passive "who cares his/shes going to hell" response.

In Ireland before; the very mention of divorse caused offense and anger to right wing catholics. Gladly Ireland had more centrally-minded followers, hopefully that is also the case with the majority of Muslims in this regard as its not 632AD.

Define the difference between cult and religion, many things can be considered cult-status such as fanatics followers of Big Brother or X-factor. The only difference I know is religion is not suppose to be about making profit.

Art is reaction - and good art provokes reaction. Sarah Maple may be using a sledgehammer rather than a more subtle approach but she has achieved just that. If your reaction is to put the windows of the gallery in, or send death threats, or even dismiss her as a slag/nincompoop/ irrelevant then you are not worthy to debate. To debate is to reason 'why?' Why do you feel offended? Why can't a woman living in the UK express herself, however crudely and naively?
