@OOOuise It all depends on the training of the horse, but in reality this scene was shot over 3 weeks and even with considerable training I don't think any horse could run at that speed for 9 minutes straight.

It's urban legend that a stunt man was killed. The lead stunt man, Yakima Canutt, confirmed that that there were injuries but no deaths. The documentary on the dvd confirms this also. The dvd is worth watching for the special features as well as the movie itself.
