How come only some of the chariots have the wheels with the protruding bar out the middle? That seems like an unfair advantage.

El Chato Heston (asi le deciamos en mi pais) estuvo magistral. Que pena que ya no se hagan producciones asi, creo que esa se filmo en Cinecitta en Roma. La mejor escena de la pelicula y sin efectos de computadoras. Verdaderamente un clasico.

no wait - if i remember correctly IMDB said that a stuntmen DID die durring the chariot race of Ben Hur (but it was in the second silent film version)

It's a false rumor.
Charlton Heston's autobiography In The Arena from 1995 specifically states that no one was seriously injured during the filming of this scene.

See Wikipedia > Ben Hur.  The story of a stunt man dying during this is an urban myth.
