it´s not only a matter of stress!..Actually, they are pronounced differently. Certain organs of articulation are in different position for the sound realisation. They may sound the same for the untrained ear.
Good work! It shows how extremely different is the pronunciation of vowels, specially the "o" vowel and the "r" sound between UK and North America. Anyone learning to fake a British accent, should study this first!

they're the same, but the turned V is stressed and the e turned is not!

no they aren't. schwas of station, element, kitchen and turned vs of cut, sun, bus are quite different.
