Bu Harni, a wonderful woman dalang (shadow puppeteer) died mid March 2006. She was a formitable person and held her own in what is generally reguarded as a man's profession. Here is a bit of non-verbal puppetry that got a lot of laughs one night in Surakarta, Java nearly 20 years ago.

  • heheheh I am. And I am interested in wayang kulit performance. I looked for wayang video for a long time, perhaps you can help me with that.thanks, btw orang indo juga?

  • bukan, orang bule. I don't understand, why don't you just GO to a wayang? They are are all over Java! Mantep, Anom, Purbo are all performing! Go! Bring a Video camera. I wish I was in Java - I would go to wayang as much as possible.

  • Ic ic, actually speaking javanese is not a problem for me. that's why I'm asking the full version, but it's alright. thank's for sharing tho. Just wondering, where can I get the vcd or dvd of wayang performance..

  • I do have a lot of Wayang video - are you in Indonesia?

  • nice performance, do you have the full version of it?n can i get it? thanks..^^

  • Full performance is 8 hours long! And no, I don't have a copy. Very little of a wayang is this kind of pantomime - most is talking - and you'd need to speak Javanese to understand...

  • Hi. I love this video. I'm writing a paper about the use of technology in wayang kulit performances for one of my masters seminar courses at the University of Toronto. I have a couple of questions for you about this video clip. Where was it filmed? Was this a performance for tourists or was is associated with ceremony? Do you know where the dalang received her training? Is this a travelling scene? Do you know if this story was part of a larger epic? Thank you so much for this video!

  • I love this

  • cool broo..!!!

  • Wayang itu enak sekali! Terima kasih atasnya.

  • I thought it was great, but I that there was more arm and leg movement... other than the pump part =P

  • dear mcpetruk, thank's a lot for sharing, love it, hope you posting more in the future,we've been waiting&praying for this, well,we grew up with it,must heard wayang before sleep, never leave wayanglive until 'tancep kayon'[much to our father/brother disgust & it's oddity for gal to enjoy it]we're sorry about bu harni, wish we knew her better, how about pak anom/mantep next?,best regards

  • actually, it'd be cool to hear how she does the voices - i've never watched wayang performed by a women before. how's the popularity of wayang in indonesia? 'Fraid we have a saying going around in msia, "Our traditional arts aren't dying, they're being buried alive". Sigh.
