TVOParents visited the newly opened Dr. J. Edgar Davey Elementary School in downtown Hamilton. Quickly becoming the hub of the Beasley neighbourhood, the school is one of the highest needs schools in the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB). Over half the families live in poverty and over 60% of the children are learning English as their second language. With the support of various funders and donors, the Beasley neighbourhood rallied to build a school that serves the entire community. The school opened in September 2010 and is equipped with computers and many technological innovations including Smart Boards and Front Row audio systems. The Beasley Community Centre is now housed within the school and offers many programs. Host: Cheryl Jackson. Guests: Principal Leah Schwenger; Isabel Sardella of the Beasley Community Association; Tracey Webster of the Beasley Beasley Child and Family Centre; Maria Gentles, a single-parent; and students Cyrus Gentles and Varonica Pham.

  • Once again, stark evidence of the failure of Canada's immigration policies. Year after year, we import poverty and crime.
