Historian, archeologist, reluctant soldier, author and pretty fair mechanic.

I would have liked to have known him.

  • He was a very unusual man, who defined himself as a medieval knight of a sort, a person who was not to be stopped by pain or physical fear. He gravitated to the near east, to Western Asia, because it was a fertile field for his interests in medieval military architecture and archaeology. He was a visionary in the sense that he saw a way for the Arabs to aid in the British cause in WWI, and also at the same time saw how that could benefit Arab independence from Turkish domination. A great man.

  • @lebarosky

    An excellent summary.

  • I find it fascinating that a man this complex and interesting still only incites many to talk about his sexual orientation... All the things this man saw, did and experienced and thats what we discuss in 2010, gay or not gay? I cant think of anything more meaningless when we discuss TE Lawrence. His favorite color and his shoes size are just as relevant. Look at his deeds..

  • Captain Shakespear embraced the East before Lawrence in not disimilar circumstances..and did so with far more insight..and without the camouflage of Arab dress..There are many men throughout history..and indeed..in recent history.. that have exceeded Lawrences deeds..Yet I still consider him a great man..In my view..His deeds were the very least of him..

  • Great!

  • ありがとう

  • Is the video footage Lowell Thomas stuff? Really cool.

  • Lawrence continues to fascinate because he was a complex person in many aspects, left a large written record, was a paradox and enigma, but you can't help but admire him despite it all, or maybe because of that very fact. My introduction to him was through John Mack's excellent biography of him A PRINCE OF OUR DISORDER, written from a psychologist's perspective with much empathy yet honesty. No one was a harsher critic of Lawrence than himself. I think many of us see ourselves in Lawrence.

  • The establishment is still scared of TEL. After visiting the straight road he was killed on and reading the accounts, I believe he was assassinated. He was kept for 6 days at Bovington Camp without visitors until he died. Its a shameful stain on Britain's past.
