In 2008 me and a couple of buddies managed 6 coho and a spring right in behind Kains Island in about an hour.We had better weather than that though!
This past fall I caught an eight pound coho bottom jigging my way back to the Koprino Harbour dock. Not a mudraker more like a stingsilda.I like it right up close to the rocks on Cliffe Point, but not in that kind of weather!

We were fishing out there with you that same week. One of the worst we've ever had for weather and fishing. Come back in July, its usually far better for fish and weather.

Thank you for the advice. As they say, hindsight is 20:20. This trip was my first ever to the westcoast. The others in the group all had been out there before and I went along with all aspects.

Should of went in beginning of August. We guide out of Winter Harbour and Port Hardy....and that's is the best time to go. This year around that time we limit our clients out with 8 Springs, and their Coho too! Not to mention the hali's.
Thanks for the tip. Nice to learn we weren't the only foolhardy souls braving such miserable conditions. I kept asking myself what the heck I was doing out there.
I lost 6 lbs that trip, from working my core muscles so hard, leaning over the gunwales all the time to clear that long sinewy kelp off the downriggers and motor legs, whilst not going overboard.
The group that went the week after we went shared photos of big fish and dead calm seas.

I agree with the guy about August - we went in July and also we went about 7 or so miles off shore --- from the looks of the video, i don't think you guys were out in deep enough water....and wow -- what crap weather!...(I posted a video response of our trip to Winter Harbor)

Rest assured we dearly wanted to go off shore!! Trip started with 45 knot (SW?) winds and 30 foot breaking waves. The horrible weather made it difficult to venture beyond Kain's Island and it was in the lee of the island where I shot the video footage, yes that was the calm water. On the 4th day it started to calm and finally we did go offshore, far enough to find 300' depth (10 miles or so?), where I promptly jigged up a 27 lb' Chinook on a Mudraker. By noon the next day the wind blew up again.

oh completely fair enough. I'm sure it was a great time anyway. A bad day fishing is better than a good day working. Where abouts are you from?

Well the trip was memorable! Was happy to break in my spanking new jigging rod when we finally got out to deep water on the 3rd day. I lowered the 1 lb lure Mudraker to the bottom and promptly jigged up a 27 lb Spring salmon!
