Jack Johnson's job at Anderson Trucking Service, Inc. (ATS) may not come to mind immediately when thinking about jobs related to wind energy, but his work is necessary to ensure that wind turbine components and their drivers travel safely.
His employer, ATS (a St. Cloud, Minnesota-based company), is the largest specialized freight carrier in the United States, with international recognition for hauling wind turbine parts.
As a safety compliance specialist, Johnson, 41, makes sure ATS has the safest and most qualified drivers coupled with the best qualified external carriers, he said. "I am very excited and proud to be involved in renewable energy."
His view is not unique among employees at ATS. Johnson said that when he started with ATS four years ago, he worked directly with drivers as Fleet Manager. "One of the first things that I learned from the drivers was that a majority of them wanted to haul wind commodity," he said. "Wind components have a prestige about them that gives the drivers bragging rights as being one of our highest exposure commodities, which has enabled us to stand strong in a challenging economy."
As a single dad raising two daughters, Johnson recognizes the value in contributing to a clean energy economy. "It's not about me as much as it is about those that will be living with the long term benefits of everyone's involvement to make a difference today," he said. "My daughters can be proud of what I do for ATS as we are making a difference for everyone."
I have had the chance to work with Jack Johnson in many different aspects of the heavy haul business and have been impressed in his professionalism each time.
