@hoodchr Two examples I have, out racing in the open sea, two days in and it was the dead of night when we started hearing a "thump, thump, thump, thump" what the hell is that???? Looking in the boat... out to sea.. nothing.. then.. Ship!!... "Jibe Jibe Jibe" the skippers yells..!! it was the freighters engine we were listening to.
Second it was our 3rd night in and we started seeing white water breaking a mile or so in front... called the navigator.. Omg our compass is out. Reef

I used to work on cruise ships. Most of the passengers were seasick endlessly when we were doing crossing the Atlantic.(Miami -Barcelona) Even with the stabilizers it was swinging vertically or horizontally but very slowly. 7-8 sea-days in rough conditions.
I do think if someone make it through all the legs (as crew) they are already winners.

yes in the night sailing it's very funny xDD

beat upwind- not for downwind machines

But the problem is the UNCERTAINTY. A whale just below the surface or a container. The boat has little chance when going this speed. It must be incredibly tiring over a time. It's life on the edge for these people - especially at night doing 25-30 knots.

I have done long distance racing before. One time around 3am the skipper shouted to me "You want to be happy its dark right now because you don't want to see the shit we're out in".
