juanita moore, just amazing

I agree on the IMITATION split vote. I have always loved Kohner and Moore in IOL.

It's my theory that Winters, a former glamour girl, won by looking plain, dowdy. This often works... that, or speaking with an accent.

Juanita Moore should have won this year. Susan Kohner should have been next to receive it. Shelly Winters shouldn't have won it and Immitation of Life should have won the best picture of 1959. What in the hell were the people who were involved in the voting process thinking?

I haven't seen Anne Frank, so it would have been nice to see more of Shelley Winters before I could make a decision. Both IOL ladies were stellar though the film was a bit maudlin compared to Diary of Anne Frank, I'm sure.

@shmarkus Hermione just shouted...

@cb46nep10 i made a mistake. susan hayward won best actress the year before-1958. simone signoret won best actress in 1959 for "room at the top". kohner's performance was better. shelley winters should have won best supporting actress in 1972 for " the poseidon adventure". also, no way "anatomy of a murder" should have been nominated for best picture ahead of "immitation of life". what were they thinking?

juanita moore should have won for best supporting actress. susan kohner should have been nominated for best actress instead of doris day for "pillow talk" and won that award instead of susan hayward for "i want to live". my opinion has nothing to do with how hot i think susan kohner was but rather strictly for her awesome performance as an actress. also, "immitation of life" should have won best picture instead of "ben hur", which sounds like a trans-gender movie. "been her, now him". get it?

all great performances,, if i had to vote it would of been hard, i would of gone for juanita moore, however i have never seen the film with hermione . mind you, the best performance was mihalia jackson singing trouble of the world, beautiful

Juanita Moore so deserved this. It's really a crime that she lost and hers has held up the best of the 5.

@GayGeisha Congratulations, with that five word comment, you have now completely lived up to your username

I love Juanita in IOL but having seen dear Thelma Ritter in Pillow Talk in this brilliant tribute, I kind of would have liked her to win (it was her fifth of six nominations...and she never won. Shelley deserved two Oscars but they should have been for A Patch of Blue and The Poseidon Adventure).
Excellent montage. I would have voted for Juanita Moore. Baddeley's nomination just baffles me.

same here. I think there was a split vote between the Imitation ladies and some weird desire to reward Shelley Winters (who had given constantly good performances).
I thought the same about Baddeley before watching the film again. Though brief, she's effective.
