  • Like Simon and Garfunkel's 'Bookends', we listened to these songs in their day, and they resonated something within us. But we were young, and really had no clue. Now 60, it may make us want to cry. But that's OK - life is a process, and every stage has its moments.

40 years on, this song is still great. Maybe better. Tom had many greats!

  • @jondoe8889 Thanks for your pertinant comment - one certainly understands what the song says with more insight as we get older. The most amazing observance, I feel, is that the song itself was written by such a young person...

  • Whoever made this video, was incredibly touching. Thanks.

  • @eiwocj Thanks for that comment - make all my own videos - an interesting and enjoyable 'hobby' - it's always pleasing to know when someone's enjoyed one!

  • This is such a good song. I remember it from 1970, loved it then and still do. I'm all too rapidly approaching my own old age and this song truly resonates. Iceaxe56, you are quite right. Tom is dealing with his own age with great gusto, still touring regularly and making great music. Look for his latest album: "What I Know". Some really great songs on it and Tom still has "it".

  • @sjbaldwin11 What's so surprising is that a young man in his early twenties (maybe late teens, even) was so perceptive. Always loved sad songs and already in my mid-30s in 1970 (singing and writing songs myself, then) this was one that really hit home. One of the very few songs written by others that I actually committed to tape for myself! Thanks for your mention of the new album - I'll look out for it...

  • @powwowdoc You're so right. So much in the news at present about the mis-treatment of the elderly in care homes etc - so sad - and my own time is now limited!!

  • Incredibe song and so true! The elderly, in our youth-worshipping culture are damn near invisible. Used to see them in the mall where I worked every day like ghosts wandering before the crowds got there. It does seem that the most advanced culture in the world can do better.

  • @ThomShelford thats what was depressing
