Yes, but have you ever noticed certain periods are called modern because of the overal advance? When you call modern, bu historical and architectural point of view, you are relating to a certain period, like when you call Medival architecture, romantic architecture, barroque music, so it is when you call modern architecture. Except, in history, you call modern, the period from 1500, wich marked a new order in the world, form medieval times to modern times.

What ever it is it´s still it´s odd to me. Have you checked the meaning of modern in a dictionary? art is art but of course there is new/modern art and there is old art. Very simple.

but that is how it's called a certain period in Art, there is no old or new in art, just pure art, doesn't means all that is new is good.

modern is a movement that goes from the 1900 to 1960
contemporary goes 70's/80's to present
