How to Build a Microphone Isolation Box - DIY Now

How to build a Microphone isolation box, or voice over recording mic booth. I built my own inexpensive wooden mic isolation box using 2 old wooden wine crates. This idea was spurn from Harlen Hogan's porta-booth, voiceover booth. This voice-over booth sits right on a desktop. Perfect for voiceovers or recording instruments.

If you listen objectively, it's an awful long way from sounding good to be honest... There's a terrible resonance to it that sounds, well, boxy. The resonance you're hearing is because you're using a box with parallel sides, causing standing waves. You need to use either a bowl shape (impractical as it would be huge) or an arc of material. Look for a Reflexion Filter and you'll see what I mean - a box is the very worst shape for this, I'm afraid.

@flatron7419 Thanks for the honest comment. It was an attempt at building something similar to Harlen Hogan's VO porta booth. You've just educated me on the some basic acoustical principals. Having the shape of an Arc (such as that Porta-Booth), would be much more ideal than my box. I'll leave the video up, to help educate others in my attempt. Hopefully they read your comment, before going into their own DIY project.

I ended up taking off the bottom rubber feet, because it was causing the box to amplify acoustically. I placed the bottom of the box on a thick towel that now deadens the acoustics that I was getting. Please add any advice, if you have any hints on how to improve this mic isolation box. Cheers!

@Ezekielkok I think it should work on vocals. I know that the Baby Blue Bottle Mic I have is used by a lot of singers. To get old used wine crates in Singapore, check with wine shops and wine importers. Only French and Italian wines still come in wooden crates, and they're phasing it out towards packing in cardboard boxes. Just ask the owner of restaurants and wine shops, if they have any wooden crates they don't want. You don't have to dine or even buy something at there shops. Just ask nicely.

@nn8nn I super lucked out on the foam. A post audio production house I do a lot of work for was revamping their studio, and I just asked if they had any old foam. I do know that you can find some used foam on ebay.sg at times. You can always get some brand new foam from Hung Bros in Sim Lim. Cheers!

if u were useing your box to narate the video, it sounded ok to me, we used a booth they called hear here booths , they blocked out all of the outside sound. i dont know ur voice would sound better but it sure cut out the back ground noise. interesting experiment.

@BananaManaTV A bowl or arc shape aren't the only shapes that would avoid parallel surfaces - you could angle the sides too. You do want to avoid standing waves, but it doesn't need to be round. Most vocal booths aren't! Great job on the build though, thanks for sharing this video!

I'm going to try something similar, but with the box from my mother in law's Samsung Blu Ray Surround Sound. I'm definitely going to add an arc kind of shape behind the microphone, but I'm not sure if it should be a parabola or a shallow arc. Any advice?
