You're right, it was an HBO special called "Alan King: Live at Carnegie Hall." I had never seen him before but just taped it randomly (on VHS, mind you). I still have that tape to this day. It's one of the funniest stand-up shows I've ever seen. His riffs on the airlines and the presidential candidates of the day were outstanding ("You've got Bush, Byrd, Biden, Babbitt, Buchanan...you've got Dole and Hart and Cuomo...and the sum total of them all...none.")

I believe that was an HBO special from around 1987. A very funny show. Alan King was a master of humorous storytelling.
