This Public Service Announcement (PSA) opens with a woman entering a public room to cast her vote in the parliamentary elections. As she walks, the voices of various men in her life run through her head, urging her to vote for the candidate they endorse. She takes a ballot, and after careful consideration, votes her mind. The final message "My Voice. My Choice." has a double meaning. In Arabic, it also means, "My Vote. My Choice." The PSA encourages women not to be dissuaded from voting their own opinions. In addition to sitting on the board of Towards Significant and Competent Parliamentary Performance, a women's organization that seeks to support women to be elected to Parliament, Director Anwaar Ali Al Ali, oversees several divisions within the Department of Children and Women of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Kuwait.
Background:
This Public Service Announcement (PSA) was produced locally in Kuwait City, Kuwait as part of a media workshop, entitled "Media, Activism and Democracy," led by Barefoot Workshops in partnership with The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). Thirteen participants from seven organizations, mostly women and youth, learned how to write, shoot, produce and edit, thirty-second noncommercial videos (Public Service Announcements), to raise awareness about social issues. The goal of the workshops was to increase discussion, debate and civic participation in the Middle East. The PSAs are available in Arabic and English to broadcasters and other organizations that wish to distribute them "rights-free" on television and/or the Internet.
