Fantastic information architecture hack. I could see this as being useful in tons of different ways. For many reasons (mostly people's general inability to experiment beyond the obvious and/or read directions) this probably would be an "optional" UI tool, but really awesome.
The only bug i see is that, unless i know to use my thumb first, I think i will be using my index. I didn't use my thumb to start the app. If anything Try using this idea and implement a shooting game, i bet that would be so awesome. You have your index as point 1 or aimer, and then the rest do to other functions while. Video game app all the way, send me royalties :)
Have you tried this out on children? My experience with an iPod touch is that they really enjoy the touch interface, and understands the swipes etc. very early.

Cool. Rather than a fixed menu, perhaps it could be part of an interactive task. For example, searching data visual through finger selection.
