I call myself Hmong, however when I talk to Chinese, I would say I am Miao. Miao outside of China do not call themselves Miao, but the Hmong in China would call themselves Miao.

Okay, niamtxiv, thank you for the explanation. Hmong culture is really interesting to me - there are lots of Hmong where I live. Why do you call yourself Miao? No Hmong I know does that...?

Actually no. Miao does not mean savage. Man means savage. The word miao have been misinterpret because in Vietnamese and Laos, it means totally different. Miao in Chinese means Young Seedling and Temple as well as Virtues and etc...

Of course, this is why many Miao fled into Southeast Asia. Like I said, I don't support communism, but I am proud of China for trying to better its country. They may be brutal to us today, but at least they are not killing our people and lay heavy taxes on our people like the Qing.

niamtxiv, there's no way you are really Hmong because no real Hmong call themselves "Miao." "Miao" means "savage" in Chinese.
