The only way the magnetic field disappears is if the inside of the earth cools sufficiently to solidify. Scientists put the projection of this happening in terms of geologic time..e.g. potentially billions of years. Not coincidentally this is also when all plate tectonic action will stop and the land masses of the earth will become locked in position.

I'd expect more from NOVA.
