This was one of Paul's all-time favorite tunes. Later he would compose "Wendy" using the same harmonies. This 1958 studio version is frustratingly short, but still a memorable performance.

  • Brubeck vs. Desmond. Brubeck was a fine jazz composer, but essentially a dissonantist as a performer. He was also smart enough to know that most listeners didn't care for that style, so he made Desmond the feature. Must have worked.

  • @dballtwo Interestingly enough, the original Dave Brubeck Trio (without Desmond) employed polytonality and was rather successful commercially. Paul desperately wanted to join that group and Brubeck had reasons not to hire him. Of course everything did work out; it's a very interesting story and told very well in Doug Ramsey's biography of Paul.

  • ... and my father says that brubeck had wonderful jazzmen around him but himself... played everything but jazz. and i think he is kind of right. paul desmond is really wonderful here, while dave... well...

  • @alajanu Dave was not as consistently inspired as Paul, but he was (and still is) quite capable. Search "Paul Desmond 85th birth date - Like Some One In Love" and listen to how Dave plays on that.

  • Apart from all the music I like, this 'For all I know", I never heard before. But I must admit, it is absolutely fine and touching. Being 63 of years, going back in time is one of the prerogatives of age, one of my first vinyl records was Brubeck and his lot, 'Take Five", 'Blue Rondo" and more. Thanks to YT, recently quite a few downloads I made, esp. this one. So Sorry there is no repeatbutton!. This crew, their ensemble-playing, good, very good.

  • @kocn53 Desmond had fired Brubeck from his own band, hadn't he? Amazing that they got back together at all. Just saw a 1976 interview with Desmond in Canada in which he was anxiously looking forward to reuniting the Quartet. If only he'd taken better care of himself.

  • Paul was the essence of cool. The man said his goal was to "sound like a dry martini", and I think he got as close as anyone's gonna get. As for Dave, he was a very good jazz accompanist; just not great shakes as a soloist. Still, I like the work he did on the Jazz at Oberlin album. He had too much classical training in him to shake it all off. Separately, both were good, but when they were together, sometimes, they reached critical mass and magic happened; especially with Morello. RIP, Joe.

  • Gotta love Paul Desmond... Thanks

  • Beautiful post, Frank. Pure Desmond.
