This piece is the oldest known secular piece of music from the Scandinavian countries. It's from Denmark and is written in Old Danish. The meaning of the words is not clear. The song text is:

Drømde mik en drøm i nat
um silki ok ærlik pæl

It is part of the Codex Runicus, which was primarily about law. The fact that the music was in a book of law makes translating it somewhat difficult.

Some scholars translate it as:

I dreamt a dream last night
of silk and fine fur

While other scholars surmise:

"tonight I had a dream about justice and fair play" or "today I had a dream about equality and honest measure"

Whichever translation might be correct, it is a melody worthy of reviving to the Current Middle Ages.

Skyn, Wynde and Wyre performs at the Vinland Games in the Shire-Marche of Blak Rose on May 8, A.S. XLV (2010 A.D.)

Skyn, Wynde and Wyre is an inter-shire music group in the south western corner of the Kingdom of the East.

The original piece is monophonic. The arrangement is by Doña Sol la Cantor.

  • From Denmark? No, it's from Scaniae, and it's written in old scaniaen.

  • @Skogsraaet The words are from a 12th century manuscript. It is considered the oldest known song in Danish.

  • all i could hear was the she said "dreamt me a dream last night,

    of silk..."

  • @bigbookofnothing

I am excited that you could understand something that I sang. I was learning how to pronounce the words from listening to a recording.

  • @cantor2000cantor well you're doing pretty good then, though the rest was gibberish to me ^^

  • @Skogsraaet Scania was a province of Denmark when this was written. So it was Danish.
