How to skim. Some DIY skills can be learnt from reading a book - plastering is probably not one of them You need someone to show you the basics, then much practice is needed. But it is possible to achieve successful plastering whilst practising -- just have a go at the small areas first. This clip is a very quick brief guide to the art of plastering.

  • Never seen postman teaching plastering before!

  • Black magic, all plasterers should be burned at the stake, I have been trying for 40 yrs and still end up finishing with a wet paintbush with more on the floor than the wall!

  • That's what happened to Chesney Hawkes he became a plasterer

  • Along the sides and tops where your new skim meets the old you should always brush along them with clean water before troweling up. It stops you pulling crap down and across your wall from where you start.

Sometimes you can brush the skim with a little water instead of just splashing it, if it has "gone a bit far", it can buy you some time and straighten out things a little, like on your trowel lines if there are any.

  • @JOCKEYSI3OLLIX what does brushing in your lines mean?

  • lol. No mention of splashing your skim with water or brushing in your lines then no?

People, do NOT listen to this man!!!

  • Good video. Thanx.

  • If thats how you are trying to teach people how to skim, you would be as well calling yourself a butcher. I only stumbled on this excuse for a tutorial by accident and can only laugh. In my 37 1/2 years plastering I think I can confidently say judging by what you have showed me, there has been more plaster fell off the back of my trowel than you have put on properly. WISE UP leave the teaching to the tradesmen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @mullibhoy wrong mate you don't leave the pva to dry you apply when pva is tacky, sorry but been plastering for 12 year's now, i do agree with your first line do, NOT FOR D.I.Y'ers!!

  • Thanks for posting. I followed your tips and just finished skimming my in laws house. Is stage nine the sandpaper?
