Wasn't a finalist this year, but not surprising. I knew as I entered it wouldn't make it.

My original idea was much more punchy (like the Don't Turn a Night out into a Nightmare one), and probably would've been a finalist because it was dramatic and would've been seen by the organisers as a good way to deter people from using ecstasy.

What stopped me?
Two words: Moral conscience.

I didn't want to lie to the public and say that if you take ecstasy you'll die. The more I researched, the more I questioned why the Australian government picked Ecstasy to campaign against. It doesn't really make sense wasting millions on such a campaign. Tobacco, alcohol absolutely bloody dwarf MDMA/ecstasy.

I wanted to be honest and say: "You will probably have fun, then be coming-down for up to a week." During this time you could grow quite depressed, be anti-social and won't be very fun to be around. If you have depression, then this time is a welcoming window to tragedies such as suicide. Not worth it.

I wanted to do a game of Russian roulette in the video; people taking pills and pulling the trigger... and saying at the end: "1 in 6 people have complications from ecstasy pills"

It's actually closer to 7 in ONE MILLION USERS.

Stuff the campaign about dirty toilets used to make pills, even this I'm not sure about since there's big money in drugs and therefore likely to be made by the same people who make pharmaceutical medication.. you know, kinda like a side-job, only they don't tell the ATO about it.

BUT YOU SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS. Why? Because ecstasy is quite new, they don't know the long-term effects very well. So are you willing to be the guinea pig?

So, play it safe people. Know what you're taking, or at least be pretty damn sure.

  • Good video, but I found your response in the info drop down very nice. Respect. I have it for you.

  • @onionhead007 Hey man, thanks heaps, I appreciate it! I have become quite frustrated with the wasted millions on campaigns when real issues get skipped over, simply because they're harder to tackle and these campaigns make it look like the government is working hard to tackle abuse. All the best buddy!

  • Finally a PSA about ecstasy that's accurate. The week after really does suck, although I'm surprised people who make ads don't focus on a real discouraging factor such as that more often...

    Props man!
