How did I do this? I will not tell you, so that you can ponder over my glorious test footage! Haha, just kidding. FIRST read this blog, the lady knows her stuff and is 5 billion times smarter than me:
http://eugenia.queru.com/2009/02/09/butter-smooth-slow-motion/

Set your cameras to 60i (HDV on the HV40/30/20's) and shutter speed at 1/1000 [TV mode]. AND...this is the important part...you need AWESOME lighting, such as a bright sunny day (due to the shutter speed you're shooting at). Follow the Blog! After Effects settings: 24fps, squared pixels, rendered uncompressed avi. Compressed using the H.264 codec. This footage was applied with After Effect's time stretch (125% - 175%). It doesn't look slow-mo, but trust me, those ice cubes were chucking really fast into the cup!

I will re-upload a longer, improved version next week!

  • awesome! and thanks for the how-to :) im deciding on buying this camera or the hf s100... which do you recommend?

  • @underpr0perlighting Hrmmm, from my memory, I believe the HF S100 does not have a viewfinder, nor does it shoot in the native 24P mode (common for the "film" look). However, the HF S100 does have sharper video, requires no tapes, and has a slightly better performance over the HV40. In the end, it's a matter of preference since they both are very similar, minus a few functions. In my case, I picked the HV40 in order to shoot in the native 24P mode. Hope that helps!

  • Can I get this smooth slow motion effect using Sony Vegas pro 9, even if the footage isn't of great picture quality? Plus that link won't work when I try it...

  • @fireflys101 Try the link again, I updated the link under the video's description. You should be able to achieve the same effect. In fact, that tutorial has a Sony Vegas option!

  • Whats best Canon Hv30 or Canon Hv40 (:

  • @REDBULLISNOBULLSHIT Good question! Both cameras are very similar. In fact when it comes to quality, you can pretty much achieve the same thing. The only cool feature in my opinion the HV40 has over the HV30 is the 24f shooting mode. It allows you to shoot at 24 frames progressively without having to deal with interlaced footage. Other than that, even the HV20 shoots well (search the short film "Locked" on Vimeo for an example of its quality). Hope that helps!
