@odinsragess Your thumb will swell regardless, swelling is coursed by excessive blood flow. Slugs do reduce the ammount of friction between your skin & the reactive resin of a ball, though, which prevents extra irritation - perhaps thats what they meant?

@StOrmCatz It was explained to me many many years ago that slugs prevented your thumb from swelling too much from reaction with the resin in the bowling ball. Just what I was told.

Thumb slugs allow for several things, firstly you can experiment with your thumb pitches without plugging your ball. There are also several types of slugs which allow for quick release & slow release. Also, some bowlers prefer the feeling of slugs compared to the coverstock/filler of a bowling ball which encourages thumb wear & tear.
