告別儀式包括傳統的英軍閱兵儀式，港督彭定康發表臨別致詞，之後由王儲查理斯王子代表英女王致告別詞。其他節目包括名為《香港精神》的團體舞蹈、男高音莫華倫歌唱等表演，­有超過2000名表演者參與。儀式舉行時一直下著滂沱大雨，令嘉賓及表演者甚為狼狽，亦添上傷感。晚上7時45分，英國旗及英治香港旗，在風笛伴奏的樂曲《Last Post》中降下。
