Sibelius' Op. 62a and 62b were pieces composed after the success of his 'Valse Triste'. They did not meet with immediate acclaim, as did the 'Valse Triste'. The Canzonetta was originally composed as Rondino der Liebenden for string orchestra but was never published; Sibelius would rework the piece for the reworked play and rename the piece Canzonetta, adding also the Valse Romantique, Op. 62b.
These 2 pieces have since been incorporated in to a "Suite" (which is not what Sibelius ever intended) now known as Kuolema ("Death"), after the play for which this incidental music was composed. The play was written by Sibelius' brother-in-law Arvid Jarnefelt (the brother of Aino, Sibelius' wife).
The 4 pieces making up the Kuolema Suite are, Valse Triste (Sad Waltz) and Kurkikohtaus (Scene with Cranes), both as Op. 44, Canzonetta, Op. 62a, and Valse Romantique (Romantic Waltz), Op. 62b.
Performing the piece is the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra led by Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen.
