Miss Bala, a Mexican movie that is a current Oscar hopeful and inspired by true events, follows beauty queen Laura Guerrero in her violent downward spiral into the hands of organized crime. The movie reflects the reality of how more women are being pulled into Mexico's drug war and its consequences. Fueled by drug demand in the US, more than 40,000 people have died in the past five years, as powerful cartels fought over lucrative trade routes. For AFP by Deborah Bonello.
