The animation shows a near collision between Southwest Airlines Flight 440, a Boeing 737, in position for takeoff on runway 24L, and Asiana Airlines Flight 204, a Boeing 747, preparing to land. Asiana 204 aborts landing procedures and overflies Southwest 440.

The animation includes audio, and was developed from flight recorder and Air Traffic Control (ATC) radar and communication recordings. The position time history of the Boeing 737 was derived from flight recorder information, while the position time history of the Boeing 747 was derived from ATC radar data. The recorded data were time synchronized and the position time histories correlated to a high-resolution image of the Los Angeles Airport and surrounding area.

  • What a shitty controller.

  • Ah, no, sadly, he didn't have a blindspot mirror the size of manhattan that would have hepled him spot that plane 1 mile out behind him and to his right.

  • @EasternMerchant It really isn't that simple

  • @EasternMerchant I totally agree. But the pilot has also an "errorfactor".

  • @Incuby These kinds of jobs need to be seriously phased out, this is beyond human capacity to handle in a consistent, safe, and efficient manner. We need to replace a human with a fully automated computer tracking and coordination system.

  • Talk about Split second decision making, hehe if it was me flying the Asiana 747, I would've panicked and jerked the yoke all the way back forgetting to throttle up in time. LOL

  • FAA let this ATC of with an warning and he´s still working today. Blame the incompetent FAA.

  • Wow..... Asiana did the RIGHT thing... WTF controller ummm did you have a late shift yesterday or did you have some shots before you came to work.... I mean did you not see that HUGE B747-400 RIGHT behind that Southwest airfcraft... You could have caused another Tenerife accident.. Whew... GOOD job pilots

  • dear asshole that was never a controller FUCK YOU

  • Dear controller, it is 'Asiana 204', not 'Asian 204'

  • Whats wrong with these stupid ATCs. Look at your screens you idiots before you kill someone.
