UPDATE: BUY MY FIRST ALBUM HERE:
http://cardiophonic.wordpress.com

Special thanks to DepFox (Selena, thanks for the wonderful introduction! I LOVE to color too!) for the inspiration and for the generous exposure!

Yesterday, I posted a song for my sister. Only a few moments after that, I received an awesome and flattering email from "depfox" (Jay of Jay & Bryan) on here. Jay said that he connected with the song and he said something about a contest he'd wished that I'd entered. Upon some investigation, I discovered amazing channel on which he and his partner share their views as openly gay parents on a number of various topics. I fell in love pretty instantly with their amazing family and felt very inspired when Jay continued to explain that there is a film being made about his family and the contest was back in February for music to use in the film.

I couldn't stop this song from coming out after surfing (& subscribing to, as you all should) their awesome and very loving positive and sometimes bravely honest channel about what it is like to be a gay family in America. This morning I finished recording the song and emailed it to Jay. I then found out about Bryan's (and Jay's) close friend recently committing suicide.

It is crazy how sometimes in just a couple of days you can feel such a powerful sense of purpose in meeting someone. With the issues I've been facing (and my sister) with our family being such a hinderance to our happiness and freedom to be the people that we are, I feel very strongly that this song was a testament not only to Jay and Bryan or to their friend who has passed, but it's a humble and genuine crumb of a message to all those who suffer any persecution whatsoever for being in any way "different" or as I like to call it, "extraordinary."

There's a line in the film "Phoebe in Wonderland" where Patricia Clarkson's amazing Theater Teacher character comforts a young girl struggling with the realization that she has Tourette syndrome: "At a certain part in your life. Probably when too much of it has gone by. You will open your eyes and see yourself for who you are. Especially for everything that made you so different from all the awful normals. And you will say to yourself, "But I am this person." And in that statement, that correction, there will be a kind of love."

"Crayons"

I got crayons cause Im living in color
Im drawing sky so Im choosing a blue
Im only 3 but Im going-on 30
Im only me but Im growing on you ;-)

Pick out a shirt and a pullover sweater
I get my arms in and then Im all set
I needed someone to color me better
I needed someone to love me the best

cause Im learning the things that they cant teach in classes
and Im reading the poetry of love on a face
I might not have a home like the kids in my yoga class
But Im balanced and poised in a really good place!

*

I lost a tooth but I got back a dollar
im saving up for a toy and a car
then one day Ill be raising my own kids
and when you think about it it really isnt that far

And its a pretty big world with a lot of conditions
but Im a pretty good kid with my heart on a wing
And were flying so far over everyones houses
Anybodys free to join us, its a family thing ;-)

*

i didnt know what color to make you
you didnt seem monochromatic to me
so if you look for yourself in my picture
Youll be the prism in the family tree

There are the people who know you and they encourage your growth
But there are people who see you and want to chop it all down
If you could try to imagine a country losing its spectrum
Wouldnt you do anything to keep its color around?

Cause its a pretty big world with a lot of conditions
but Im a pretty good kid with my heart on a wing
And were flying so far over everyones houses
Anybodys free to join us, its a family thing ;-)

  • @NicciG101 just saw this, miss ya kiddo! we'll hang soon ;-) xo

  • Your dancing scares me...

  • @justmoijah it scares me a little too ;-)

  • How opposed are you to having this performed at a concert I've got coming up? It'll be a part of a classical piano recital - kind of like an encore piece. I'll provide the backstory, so that people understand how awesome the song is. I'm thinking that you've got incredible talent, and a great heart. I particularly love your willingness to tackle the concepts of spirituality.

And I completely agree with you: The Leffews are important people, at an important time in American history.

  • @canadianhumility I would be completely HONORED and HUMBLED. Please feel free, absolutely!
