on the nails, its mostly actually cuz u need to press the frets with the gut of ur finger but to strum you need to use nails if ur not using a pick

Many classical guitarists like using long nails. There are many, though, which do not, including some of the best like Andre Segovia, Julian Bream, and John Williams.

So it is a matter of taste, obviously not necessity.
