On September 22, 2009, Carnegie Mellon University dedicated the new Gates Center for Computer Science and the Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies with a day of celebration culminating in a ribbon cutting. Ray Lane, chairman of the university's board of trustees, officially dedicated the buildings, while Bill Gates, co-chair and trustee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and chairman of Microsoft Corp., and Pittsburgh philanthropist Henry Hillman cut the ribbon.

The newly constructed Gates and Hillman Centers contain classrooms, research space and offices for the School of Computer Science.
