i attended that school when it happened.... i still remembered the blackened classrooms and the burnt debris everywhere... ALL THE YEAR 1 AND 2 classrooms were destroyed..

When a structure is completely engulfed the firefighters here in the USA use the term "surround and drown". It's when a structure has no hope of being saved so pour as much water on it as possible. I'm sure you there in New Zealand have a similar term. This seems to be such a case.
