Its not forgotten because I'm taking a mythology class in College. People study it everyday even if you dont know. Tolken took Norse mythology mixed with welsh myths.

Tolkein was inspired by pretty much every culture out there, not just Norse or Welsh. But yes, Welsh influence is the most visible.
