VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.—They're not visible unless unearthed, but the pipes that carry precious fresh water through the cantonment area at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., are becoming overdue for a remodel. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District is spearheading a $2 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded project to update the some 25,000 lineal feet—roughly 4.7 miles—of pipes that carry the water from two reservoirs nearby to the many inhabitants of the base, as well as its fire department. The project, which broke ground in July, is estimated to be complete in late December.
