The seemingly random motion isn't really random. This is a completely deterministic system. But because the displacement from equilibrium is not small, you can't ignore the higher order terms in the Taylor expansion of the equation of motion. According to chaos theory, changing the initial conditions just a little bit significantly changes the motion. If the initial condition were EXACTLY the same each time, then you could predict the motion.

Theoretically if you could eliminate all friction in the joints and air resistance it would never stop.
