John Philip Holland emigrated to the United States in 1873. In 1875 his first submarine designs were submitted for consideration by the U.S. Navy, but turned down as unworkable. The Fenians, however, continued to fund Holland's research and development expenses at a level that allowed him to resign from his teaching post. In 1881 Fenian Ram was launched, but soon after, Holland and the Fenians parted company angrily, primarily due to issues of payment within the Fenian organization, and between the Fenians and Holland.

John Philip Holland continued to improve his designs and worked on several experimental boats, prior to his successful efforts with a privately built type, launched on 17 May 1897. This was the first submarine having power to run submerged for any considerable distance, and the first to combine electric motors for submerged travel and gasoline engines for use on the surface. She was purchased by the Navy (on 11 April 1900) after rigorous tests and was commissioned on 12 October 1900 as USS Holland. Six more of her type were ordered and built under the supervision of Arthur L. Busch, the head of construction at the Crescent Shipyard in Elizabeth, New Jersey and the same shipyard where the USS Holland (SS-1) was developed.

This USS John Philip Holland design was also adopted by others, including the Royal Navy in developing the Holland class submarine. The Imperial Japanese Navy employed a modified version of the basic design for their first submarines, although these submarines were at least 10 feet longer at about 63 feet.

John Philip Holland also designed the Holland II and Holland III prototypes.

  • Too bad the British ended up using the sub' against us, ever noticed how they can't come up with anything original? Their Union Jack is a rip-off of three flags as are their military tactics.

  • It was Irish-American, John P. Holland who ultimately founded (what was) the world's largest defense contractor. His company is now known as General Dynamics. Google this. Company never respected that fact, nor did they respect him as an inventor, as they stole his patents and took his name while leaving him without the credit that he honestly earned. Company was acquried in this ill-gotten way. Same thing happend to Mr. Holland's friend, Arthur L. Busch who worked in concert with John Holland

  • @iraforlifez Union flag not union jack. unless it's on a boat! ever noticed how after all this time the americans still can't get anything right? no offense to all you normal americans it's just this ignorant twit.

  • You are both false in 1997 an american nuc sub fired on a Chinese navy vessel as it intervierd on a south Korean navy operation

  • Holland make a breakthrough and it was only one of many for the Irish like if it wasn't for the irish us Americans would not have independents

  • Anglos reinvented the history, always it´s the same. like in trafalgar, now we know that was not defeated the "Invincible Armada". Only 35 ships were sunk and were sunk for bad wether, not by valient British. And 4.000 Spanish men succeded attack in the Irland coast, this was a nightmare for the British. The rest back to Spain. But no one knows the story of Jenkins' Ear. "Cartagena de Indias 1741". Spanish Armada the first Armada of the world 1537 and the first to travel around the world 1519-21

  • The first "Real" submarine is of Spaniard inventor (Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol). See Ictíneo II in 1864-7, was the first combustion engine-driven submarine, propelled by an early form of air-independent propulsion. It was also the first submarine to overcome the basic problems of machine-powered underwater navigation. See wikipedia /wiki/Ictineo_II . And the first military electric submarine (two functionals torpedoes) is Peral Submarine in 1884-8 wikipedia wiki/Peral_Submarine .Spaniard too.

  • CORNELIUS DREBBEL INVENTED THE SUBMARINE, NOT HOLLAND.

  • @7235moo What about the CSS Hunley? That was in 1864, wasn't it??
